Servants
Servants are those who are employed by the Acesian family to perform certain tasks. They are almost always Empyreans and have training on one area or another. Some serve as secretaries or scribes to a particular family member or to the house in general. Others oversee the kitchens or the gardens or serve as body servants to the nobles. They earn money for their work and are free to come and go as they wish. They can also freely leave their job if they so desire, though many seem to become members of the family. A young noblewoman might have the same personal servant for many many years, forging a kind of friendship between the two. Others may pass their positions on to their sons or daughters, proud that generations of their family has worked for many generations of the Acesians.
Servants tend him have their own quarters within the household if they wish, or live outside in their own apartment or home, if they are well-off enough to afford it. They dress in the colors of Acesius. Dusky orange or white chitons and tunics edged in gold embroidery and most often the sun disk of Apollo is included. Their attire is cut from a better quality of cloth than that of the slaves attire, for their work is lighter and they are usually seen in the presence of other noble Empyreans.
Slaves
Slaves are nothing more than property of the Acesian household and they are the ones that do the hardest of the manual labor. Some slaves are born into it, for their parents were slaves, as were their parents before them. Others are the spoils of war, captured civilians put to work rather than killed. Still others are those who owe a debt to the family in one way or another. For example, an Empyrean farmer might offer his children in exchange for assistance in a fledging farm. The children work for the Acesians as slaves until the father can make enough money to pay back the loan that was given to him to assist his household. When the debt is paid, the slaves are free to return to their families. Slaves also provide entertainment, such as gladiators, who represent the House in the arena. These slaves, though purchased, can eventually 'win' their freedom if they continually prove themselves in the arena and bring honor to the family. This is especially true if the gladiator is fortunate enough to reach an age where he can no longer fight, but has certainly earned a reward.
The majority of slaves are mongrels, though the house does keep those of other races as slaves as well, though those mostly come as spoils of war, or if they were purchased from a slave auction. Rarely does the Acesian household take Empyreans as slaves for life. If an Empyrean is an Acesian slave, it is in the capacity of an indentured servant.
Slaves wear a standard wool tunic of dusty orange, the sun disk of Apollo embroidered on the chest of the tunic in a lighter orange thread for gold thread is reserved for the higher servants and nobles. Most go barefoot, but others wear leather sandals. Many also bear an Acesian tattoo somewhere on their body, marking that slave as property of the Acesian household. It is not large, for slaves can be sold, but it is visible enough should a dispute ever arise as to whether a slave is a free man or not. Slaves live in the slave quarters of the household, usually near the kitchens or another less-desirable location of the house. Men and women are housed in separate rooms, each like barracks. Lines of pallets fill the room, giving them little privacy. On rare occasions, slaves will have their own room or closet off of their master's private suite. This might happen for two reasons: The slave could be needed at any hour and at an arm's length, or the slave is especially favored by his master or mistress. An example of this is Selene's slave Melora who was a gift when Selene turned seventeen. Melora serves as a scribe for Selene's study of art and has become quite valuable to her. She is similar to a favorite pet, but certainly not a friend or confidant.
